Preface
Community is so much a part of who we are that we often do not realize how much we depend on it. This year, as our campus and wider communities confront local, national, and global challenges, fósforo 16 offers multiple perspectives on our common humanity.
From a Jewish wedding in 1890s Manchester, England, to scenes from early twentieth-century village life in Galicia, to memories of Puerto Ricans claiming Worcester as their own in the 1970s, to the Holy Cross campus and Worcester of today, the works in this edition present community as a vital living body both torn apart and brought together through the generations.
The contents of this edition tap into the power of words and images to join us, uneasily or not. Our fractured communities emerge restored through creative conversations and the artistic imagination, helping us to rediscover what Paola Cadena Pardo and her students call our común-unidad.
A celebration of community through the artistry of our reflections and lived experiences, fósforo 16 invites us to be inspired by the tender, painful, lasting bonds that hold us together.
