This year, the Holy Cross community has faced many difficult discussions, making “community” more important than ever before on campus. Community allows us to come together, feel supported, create a discussion, and reach a better understanding. Community also serves as a way for people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives to share something in common (even the words “common” and “community come from the Latin
communis, which means “shared in common”). My experience as a singer in Holy Cross’s a cappella group “Fools on the Hill,” for example, allowed me to develop relationships outside of the usual people I surround myself with. Likewise, my decision to study abroad during my junior year pushed me to develop relationships with students of different nationalities and perspectives. I believe that community not only gives us individual support, but it also pushes us outside our comfort zone. It is in a community that we are challenged to grow.
