AM I LATINA ENOUGH FOR YOU?

Is it… the coils that grow from my scalp… which are remnants of resilience and the stories my ancestors held on their backs

Is it… my skin… for when the sun penetrates my melanin deepens to a golden/darkened shade

Is it… my pronunciation… the moments when my tongue doesn't allow the r to roll… just like your eyes do once you hear it yourself.

Hola, me llamo Miah, ¿Cómo estás?

AM I LATINA ENOUGH FOR YOU?

(Long pause)

Are my taste buds that crave plantones y arroz con pollo not enough for you?

Does Saturday morning waking up to Romeo Santos y Celia Cruz not count?

Or do the eyes glued to la rosa de guadalupe not suffice?

AM I LATINA ENOUGH FOR YOU?

(Long pause)

I am not your negrita

I am not your no sabo

I am not your afro-latina punching bag… Others will not throw their micro aggression punches at me whenever they’d like

AM I LATINA ENOUGH FOR YOU?

Actually, your answer does not matter, because

IT IS IN MY BLOOD, IT IS IN MY CHILDHOOD, IT IS IN MY EXPERIENCE. I AM LATINA ENOUGH FOR ME.
