Donald Unger
Vows
My great grandparents, Lithuanian Jews, Tsemach Beker and Chana Raivid, emigrated to England—becoming in the process Sam and Annie Baker—where my grandfather, Solomon (“Charlie”) Baker, was born.
The family then emigrated to the US, piecemeal, my great grandfather going first, with a few of his elder sons, my great grandmother, and grandfather, following later. My Grampa Sol earned his law degree from Suffolk University while working as a streetcar conductor in Boston.
When they lived in England, my great grandfather, a carpenter, left the family to go to South Africa for several years, sending money back to support the family. In the 1930s, my great grandparents moved to what was then British Palestine, but, finding the environment too violent, they returned to the US, where they are both buried.
