Fósforo reignites! An IT error erased our email archives in 2024, obliging us to pause and regroup. With fósforo 21, though, we are back to cultivating creativity at Holy Cross. Losing the archives left us with a kind of amnesia, disrupting our sense of continuity. The process of renewing ourselves finds echoes in this year’s content, in Sophie Sundaram’s photo collages and Éowyn Bailey's creative reworkings of enduring ancient myths. It comes alive in the ideas, expressions, voices, and insight in these pages. Many of the writers are new to the College, and many have never written in Spanish before (or been given the occasion), yet their work pick up the echoes of a tradition as old as literature itself. Combining what the Real Academia Española (RAE) lists as meollo, entendimiento, agudeza, ingenio (essence, understanding, sharpness, wit) in its definition of fósforo, the contents of this issue form the generative elements of a collective memory, offering a vivid view of the community that we continue to make together.
Image on the back cover of the print edition, which ran from 2004-2018. Fósforo went fully online in 2019.
