fósforo ignites. In Spanish, the title means match, chemical element 15, bringer of light, creative spark. Elemental and explosive, fósforo is part forum, part showcase, part creative release. The diversity of Hispanic and Latinx culture has grown steadily at the College of the Holy Cross, and with fósforo it has been granted a voice.
The Department of Spanish and its partners across campus wanted to create a space where Spanish could be heard and multilingual creativity presented not as a function of a language program but as a community-wide cultural reality. Each issue contains contributions from students studying Spanish at the College and in the community, from students for whom Spanish is not a requirement but a heritage, from (Foreign) Language Assistants whose home is in Spain and Latin America, and from professors whose devotion to Hispanic and Latinx cultures is the reason for being at Holy Cross.
fósforo celebrates the Hispanic and Latinx contributions to the diversity of Holy Cross. Its existence is a reminder that on campus, in the community, in the U.S. and indeed the world, English is not the sole language of the creative imagination.
